Web Hosting Jargon Buster

In this article, I am going to introduce a few web hosting jargons in a concise way.

Disc Space - The term refers to the amount of physical space devoted to holding the client’s content (which is basically his website files or stored databasesemails).

Monthly Traffic – If people visit one’s site, data is sent from his server to their computer. That data may also include emails received and downloaded to one’s PC. At the end of each month, this request data is summed up to show the total data transfer or monthly traffic.

POP3 Email – POP means ‘Post Office Protocol’ which is a clientserver protocol for collecting email on a server from individual mail accounts.A straightforward online control panel lets client to configure the users and passwords.

IMAP – Instant Message Access Protocol (IMAP in short) differs from POP3 as it allows remote clients to access email stored on a remote server instead of downloading it. A user can always access his mail from his home PC or mobile devices since the mail is centrally stored. Microsoft OutlookOutlook Express and Mozilla MailThunderbird are known to have IMAP support.

Email Redirects – Email redirect is better known as email forwarding. Instead of collecting email from the server, one can arrange for mail addressed to his domain to go to mailboxes hosted elsewhere.

Domain Name – Domain name is a unique name which identifies a website. It workds as a permanent web address and provides a professional web presence. While moving a site can be really messy in case of a domain owned by others, registering one’s own domain name lets him keep same address even if his site is moved.

BBS - BBS stands for ‘Bulleting Board System’, a computerized meeting system where users can have discourses, make announcements and downloadupload files. There are copious BBSs around the world, most of which rely on a direct modem tomodem connection over a phone line using a single computer.

MySQL – MySQL is the most popular open source relational database management system (RDBMS) in the world with more than four million installations powering websites, business applications etc. It is a very effective language for adding, accessing and processing data in a database. MySQL is specially recognized for its flexibility, reliability and most importantly, speed.

CGI – CGI means Common Gateway Interface, a protocol that allows a webpage to execute a program on a web server. Common CGI programs include counters, guest books and forums. CGI scripts are programs written in PERL that is stored on the remote web server and run on the web server in response to a request from a particular user.

PHP - Hypertext Preprocessor (PHP) is a widely used general-purposed server side scripting language. It is very suitable for web development as user can embed it into HTML pages. Many popular CMS systems are based on MySQL.

Virtual Server – A virtual server is a UNIX based server environment which allows multiple independent servers to work on the same hardware. It is the significant trait which discerns virtual server from dedicatedshared servers.

Open Source Software and osCommerce

Author: buzz42, 19/04

by Myles O Reilly

Open Source Software and its Relation to osCommerce

E-commerce sites such as osCommerce function through the use and continued success of open source software – in fact, open source software is what makes these sites free. So what exactly is open source software? The purpose of article is to help you better understand what open source software is.

Basically, open source is based on the idea that when people have access to a software’s source code they can change, improve and evolve a piece of software at astonishing speeds – a characteristic that ends up produces really great software that meets the needs of its users.

Open source software is not just free code for website and software. Open source software is “governed” by the Open Source Initiative. According to the website for the Open Source Initiative it must meet several criteria to actually qualify as open source:

First of all open source software must not restrict anyone from selling (or giving away) the software. In other words, it cannot require a royalty or fee. For a product to be open source, it must also provide the source code so that the users can easily evolve the software to fit their needs and any software created with free software must be free as well. Furthermore, open source software distribution cannot discriminate against people or fields.

So, how did this concept begin? Most experts on open source software will agree that the concept of open source software began with the creation of the internet which was created and improved upon by it’s users who continually changed the code to make it work for them.

Then, when computers were first used, programs were often sent as a printed version that had to be entered into the computer line by line. Programmers not only entered the programs onto the computers, they also were able to “play” with the programs and make changes as well as share there ideas with others.

Once computer became more mainstream and people other than programmers began using programs, the need (and desire) for the source code declined. This is when software companies began realizing the economical benefits of keeping their source code for software private. This also began the influx of new and incompatible operating systems which further declined the ability for programmers to share and collaborate with one another. While there are benefits to creating and selling software in this manner, some programmers realized the limits this posed on the usability of the software.

Without keeping the source code open, the users were bound to the limits of the software and were not able to alter it to fit their individual needs. This is what began the development of the GNU Public License operating system for open source software. The premise behind renewing the concept of open source software is that software development would be faster and more efficient in giving people the programs they need and want to use.

Today, open source software is becoming more and more mainstream and is used quite frequently on the internet for websites and browsers.

How does it all relate to osCommerce?

Obvious by its name, osCommerce is based on the concept of open source software. This means that osCommerce is free to use and the community members can feed off of one another to continually develop the code that they use. The store owners don’t simply purchase a software program (such as a shopping cart code) that they need to implement as is. They can design, develop and evolve their store presence to meet their changing needs. The beauty of open source code in a situation such as this is that the members of the community can help one another develop new code on an ongoing basis.

A Brief History of Selling on Ebay and How Things Change Over Time

Author: buzz42, 17/04

by Michael Dappert

I began selling stuff on Ebay in July of 1998. Since then Ebay has grown to enormous proportions and I am not sure how many of the millions of people who visit Ebay every day really know much about what it was like and how it has changed. I will not pretend to present a comprehensive history of Ebay which may have already been done or will most certainly be done at some point in the future. Please, allow me to just relate my own experience of buying items and selling them for profit on Ebay.

In 1996 I was one of the co-founders of a company that provided local dial-up internet access for the small rural community where we live. The company is still in business and has grown with the times to now be a primary provider of high-speed wireless internet access in several communities in 3 counties in the area. So, I have been closely associated with the internet for the past 11 years.

In 1997 or so we started to hear about a web site called Ebay, an online auction site where people were buying and selling stuff. I was no stranger to auctions having attended auctions with my parents when I was a young child. And now as an adult, I still attended estate or farm auctions in the area. So, I checked out the site and thought it might be an interesting thing to try. In 1998 I registered as an Ebay user and started to look for some stuff to sell.

The first item I sold on Ebay was a little hand woven wool rug. It was only about 2 feet by 3 feet and quite worn because it was pretty old. I paid 5 dollars for it and it sold for 20 dollars which I thought was pretty good since it was four times what I had paid for it. If I had a hundred dollars worth of stuff sell for 400 hundred that would be some good money.

I was off and running to sales all over the area. My wife and I bought stuff of all sorts, brought it back to our office, took pictures, wrote descriptions, and listed the stuff during the evening so it would end a week later during the evening when people were home in front of their computers.

At that time Sunday evening was the prime time to have your auctions end. It was then that the largest volume of potential customers were on the Ebay site. Keep in mind that internet access at work was not nearly as prevalent as it is now. People used their computers from home in the evening. The downside to this was the Ebay site would become so busy the site would sometimes become unresponsive for buyers and sellers alike.

There was nothing worse than having to wait for a couple of minutes for each page view in the listing process to happen or, worse yet, have some one trying to bid on your stuff that is ending in a couple of minutes and they cannot get the page up. Ebay was working furiously to update its software and hardware and its internet connections to handle the traffic that just continued to grow.

On the Ebay front page it used to say how many items were for sale at any given time. I remember seeing that figure at around 800,000 and thinking it was huge. I do not know how many millions of items are now for sale on Ebay at any given time and not sure if they even say any more.

I have always focused on selling antiques and collectibles on Ebay. Like any other area of the country there are 8 or 10 auctioneers in a four county area around us. When we really started to go to auctions a lot there would be anywhere from 2 to 6 auctions during any given week one could attend. We bought a lot of stuff because it was usually cheap.

I would have 50 to 75 items for sale on Ebay at any given time. A person could buy stuff for a dollar or two or maybe a little more and list it on Ebay for a minimum of 9.99 and it would sell for maybe 15 or 20 dollars or more. You never knew what something would bring which is why it was so much fun. It seemed like you could sell just about anything for a profit.

Estate sales and auctions have always been my largest source of items to sell on Ebay. In 1998 and for a few years after these auctions were attended by the local public, maybe a couple of collectors, and a handful of antique dealers.

Nowadays, upon arriving at an auction site there are still those same groups of people but there is another group who have come exclusively looking for items to sell on Ebay. These people may have come from 50, 100, 200, or more miles away.

Before the auction you see people going through the days offerings while talking to someone on a cell phone who is probably in front of a computer telling them what something might potentially bring or has sold for on Ebay. Sometimes these people are specialized or sometimes they seem to want to buy everything at the sale. Consequently, prices at live auctions have risen to where many items sell for what they might sell for on Ebay and the people who seem to have to buy everything are most likely just spinning their wheels and really going nowhere.

The cost of doing business on Ebay has steadily increased over the years. It is still a bargain considering the market exposure your offerings receive. In the past the expenses associated with selling on Ebay were kind of an afterthought. Now the expenses are something to consider.

I will certainly continue to sell items on Ebay with the hope of picking up some extra cash from time to time. There are numerous methods, books, and programs to make millions on Ebay. Some of them may work but probably only if you are willing to work hard at it. I am sure there are lots of people whose sole enterprise is selling things on Ebay. There are people selling stuff from warehouses, offices, garages, home offices, off the dining room table, or their bedroom. All of them contributing to making Ebay the most successful online business of them all.

Michael Dappert is a co-founder of Winco, Inc., a provider of wireless internet access to small communities in West Central Illinois. Everyone is invited to discuss a wide range of issues at Flyoverfolks.com.

The Alexa Traffic Rank Can Be Deceiving

Author: buzz42, 02/02

By Tim Predaina

Running a traffic exchange on a domain that I registered in 1999, the site receives a lot of traffic by default. It seems that most webmasters and other potential members will check the Alexa traffic rank to determine if the website is receiving enough traffic to make it worthwhile to sign-up. One webmaster was kind enough to email me about Alexa saying that they showed "no data" for my site.

The problem is that Alexa can only rank traffic for a website if they are aware of the traffic. They do this by collecting the information gathered from their toolbar which is installed by visitors to their site. I consider this "spyware", but that's another issue. They admitted this in a response to a support request I sent to them about my site showing no data. This is the reply I received:

Thank you for contacting Alexa Internet.

We do currently show traffic data for checks4free.com. Because the site has a very low Reach (number of Alexa users who visit the site), the single-day rank might occasionally reflect NA meaning that no Alexa Toolbar users visited the site on a given day.

Thank you for your interest in Alexa.

Best Regards, Alexa Internet Customer Service

This means that even though the traffic exchange is getting an average of 300 visitors a day, they don't know about it unless the visitor has the Alexa Toolbar installed. Now I admit that compared to Google, 300 visitors a day is low, but it does keep the site running.

I wanted Alexa to know about "ALL" of the traffic my traffic exchange website was receiving, not just traffic from their toolbar users. I wanted them to know not because I support them, but because so many other users did and they were apparently unaware of the traffic ranking prejudice. I accomplished this by installing a hidden alexa traffic rank banner on my site. I hid the banner for two reasons. First because the ranking was so low no one would sign-up and second, because I was unwilling to advertise a service that was not providing a fair and accurate report of the website's true traffic.

The banner was hidden by setting the attribute style="display: none" . The code executes but won't display the resulting image. This works for table cells, paragraphs and other HTML tags.

Since installing the hidden code on January 15th, 2007, the traffic rank for checks4free.com had improved by over four and half million within fifteen days. That doesn't mean there was that much traffic, only that the website had moved up the list from the six millionth spot to approximately the one millionth spot.

You can check the alexa traffic rank for the Checks4Free Traffic Exchange using this URL: http://www.alexa.com/data/details/traffic_details?url=checks4free.com.

If your website has a low alexa traffic rank, I hope the suggestion in this article will help you to improve your ranking as well. It is unfortunate that webmasters are forced to give up vital visitor data on their websites in order to avoid a biased review that could potentially result in fewer customers. The help file on the alexa website talks about the biased ranking. However, to the millions of users that base an opinion about a website using the alexa traffic rank, numbers speak louder than words. Your only other option is to hope that more alexa toolbar users visit your website.

Details Of Getting A Blog

Author: buzz42, 23/11

By M6.Net Web Hosting

Blogs, the abbreviation of Web Logs (online journals), are becoming more and more popular all the time. People are starting new blogs at an astounding rate so it’s safe to assume that there are constantly people out there who want to know how to get a blog going. Despite personal feelings about the actual quality of the majority of blogs out there on the Internet, that’s what I hope to be able to help you do with this article.

First things first, you need somewhere to deposit your thoughts. You need to decide how you want to attack this. Your choices are:
- To use a blog hosting service such as eBloggy (http://www.ebloggy.com) or BlogEasy (http://www.blogeasy.com).
- To host a blog yourself on a server of your own choice.

Both options have their free or paid subsections. The blog hosting services mentioned here are free but there are paid services out there. MSN now offer ‘Spaces’, which are essentially blogs attached to your MSN account and may be of interest to some. Web hosting can also be free or paid but you’ll find it difficult to find a free service that will offer you the features you’ll need to run a blog backend. One place to look is your Internet Service Provider (ISP) that may offer some free web space. This web space often contains as many features as many professional web hosting packages although it offers less space. Blogs tend not to take up a whole lot of room so this shouldn’t be a problem. The advantage of hosting your own blog over using a service is that you have greater control over how it works, how it looks etc. You also don’t have to put up with there being ads on your page (unless you find some free hosting which usually has advertising put at the top of your site). The downside is that it can be a bit more complicated to function.

If you’re going to host your own blog you’ll need to find yourself a blog backend. This is the program that runs on the server and allows you to upload new journal entries while allowing other people to view them. You’ll have to either choose a backend that fits within your web hosting package’s limits or a hosting package that meets the backend’s requirements. The general requirements are PHP and MySQL but you can get some backends that work solely with PHP or even Java. It’s important to make sure that you can change the read/write permissions of the PHP files on your server (using CHMOD or an equivalent, talk to your host—they’ll know what you’re talking about). There’s a nice breakdown of many different beckends and their features and requirements that can be found at, http://www.asymptomatic.net/blogbreakdown.htm. I personally use Pivot because it doesn’t require MySQL and it has RSS distribution, which is nice.

Once you’ve got yourself a hosting package and a backend you need to install the backend. This can get tricky but most of them come with an install program and you should be able to work through it if you follow the instructions that will undoubtedly come with the package. If you run into difficulties your hosting provider’s support team should be happy enough to help you along.

So now you have yourself a blog up and running; it’s time to fill it with content. What you write is up to you. Generally people write about their lives, how they feel, what they think, and similar topics. You can be much more diverse and creative than this though. You could for example post creative writings on your blog, as well as discuss news and current affairs, or anything else that you can imagine. It’s your personal space to write what you like and get it out there for others to read and give their opinions on.

Making people come and read your blog could take some effort. You need to make them aware that it exists and keep it interesting so that they continue coming back. Nothing kills off a readership base like a lack of updates. At first you can start small with your ‘publicity’ by telling friends and family about it. Put a link to your site in your MSN or other messenger program nickname. Put a link in your email signature so that everyone you email sees it. Get your friends interested and they’ll tell others and you’ll probably be able to build up a small community with relative ease. For attracting the broader public you need ways to let the wider community know you are out there. Spend time at other people’s blogs, make it a habit to head over there and read their posts. If it’s appropriate put a link to your site in a comment box or guest book on their site. Visit forums related to blogs (or just forums in general) and become an active member there. As long as you have a link to your site in your signature, people will probably head on over for a look.

You can also submit your blog to lists such as Blogrank.net (http://www.blogrank.net). These are sites dedicated solely to getting people into blog sites, and while it may be hard to climb into the higher ranks, simply having your site listed will probably improve your hit rate. You could also submit your site to as many search engines as possible. Perhaps you could even write yourself an article like this one with your link in the bio field. Beyond this you’re going to have to work out your own methods for publicizing your site. Just think creatively about how and where you can get a link put in and you’ll be fine.

Getting your blog set up and running can be an involving task but the results will be worth it. A final word of warning: Don’t get too engrossed in your blog. You need a life in order to be able to write about your life! As I wrote in a previous article it has been found that blogging can sometimes have a detrimental effect on a person instead of the positive effect that it was designed for. Try not to write only for yourself; it’s a public forum for others to read so try and write entries that will be of some benefit to the wider community as well as to you. Blog safe and have fun!

Voip Softswitch 101 – VOIP Elusive Backbone Explained

Author: buzz42, 04/11

By Mike Houstan

Throughout the early days of voice over protocol, Voip softswitches have become the most crucial element of this communication technology, which serve as the key enabler of Voip transmission service delivery.

Voip Softswitch is by no means a straightforward out-of-the-box switching gear. It is a system which comprised of multiple single elements that adds to the overall functionality of the whole Voip backbone.

There also multiple add on supplementary tools which create greater functionalities of a given Voip softswitch. Since the principle function of signaling and media control is the same for almost any types of Voip softswitch, you can compare different types of such devices from different vendors by supplemented add-ons they come with.

The Voip softswitches have been the key enabler for Voip switching technology as well as the driving force behind the IP telephony industry. As such, to keep up with the demands of increasing support as well as the need for ways to drive down cost, it’s pretty encouraging to see how Voip softswitches has evolved into a profitable revenue-generating tool on a carrier network.

[+] Optimal Network Management

Most carriers need to keep their cost low and margin as high as possible in optimizing their traffic exchange. These Voip softswitches come into picture with its intelligent routing capabilities which are based on their cost to quality ratios, load and other criteria in real time. Such tools are known to bring forward a profitable margin of 30%

[+] Variety of business models

One business model generated from these Voip softswitches is by offering Voip exchange services, where potential customers may buy or sell telephony minutes from multiple Voip providers.

Another viable business model is leasing Voip softswitch partitions to Tier 2 and Tier 3 operators which do not have their own Voip infrastructures in place. These small operators may use the leased softswitch capability to resell minutes to customers.

Today, Voip softswitches have become the important part of Fixed Mobile Convergence (FMC) scenarios. This can be seen by the increasing number of mobile service providers who are offering cheap Internation Long Distance (IDL) calling.

The convergence of the wireless and wireline domains has opened up a new and exciting ways to serve to the Voip customers where the use of Voip softswitches has paved a way for further development of new IP based services.

Additionally, carriers will continue to use softswitches to maximize the efficiency of their networks today and will definitely rely on them as the FMC has brought a new wave to the Voip market tomorrow.

Voip has been receiving some heavy spotlights and many people are opting for Voip Switching to cater for their cost saving plans.

You can get more information on Voip business solution and Voip test systems from Mike Houstan at http://www.mybusinessvoip.info.

Using this great script you can create unlimited categories and subcategories, upload images for the categories and the advertisements, define variable fields for the advertisements per categories etc.

Web hosting requirements for Noah's Classifieds

Before you start the installation process, ensure that your web host offers PHP support (Php4 script module is necessary) and MySQL database. If you are not sure which version of PHP your web hosting provider currently uses, contact their help desk and ask them first.

How to install Noah's Classifieds

In the first step visit developers website and go to download section. Even thought there is a "Prices" section on their website you can download the script for free. You pay only in case if you need script customization. Download the *.zip or *.tgz archive and extract it on your hard disk. Use your favorite ftp program (Total Commander will do) to upload these files to your web host. Now point your browser to install.php file. The installation process will start. Follow the step by step instructions on the screen. The script will ask you for mysql username, password etc. and will create MySQL tables. The installer will try to make necessary changes in your config.php file. In case your web host doesn't allow this you have to open config.php in your text editor, edit it manually and then upload to your web host.

Another and easier solution how to install this PHP script is to sign up for a quality web hosting service which offers pre-installed PHP scripts. How to install and run phpAdsNew

Author: buzz42, 17/08

by Bedrich Omacka

What is phpAdsNew? It is great script written in PHP which can be used to manage different ad campaigns on your website. PhpAdsNew supports banners of any size (including flash banners), pop-ups, text ads and many different types of rich media ads. Using this script you can manage third party ads, e.g. ads from banner exchanges. And the good message is that this script is free.

How to install phpAdsNew?

First, ensure that your web hosting provider offers PHP support (PHP 4.0.4 or higher) and MySQL database (3.23.3 or higher). Then download the zip or tgz package and unzip it to your hard drive. You can use WinZip or Total Commander to do this. Now upload the files to your web host. Change the permissions of the config.inc.php file using "chmod a+w config.inc.php". Create new MySQL database with any name, e.g. phpadsnew (or use existing database). Now you are able to run the installer. Point your browser to http://www.yourdomain.com/phpadsnew (or another folder where you copied the files). Follow the instruction on the screen and finish the installation process.

Another and easier solution how to install this PHP script is to sign up for a quality web hosting service which offers pre-installed PHP scripts. Then easily go to your control panel, find the section with pre-installed scripts and select phpAdsNew. The installer will do all the job for you. All you need to do is to choose the script you want to install.

How to run phpAdsNew?

Go to admin interface and create at least one zone. Zone is the place on your website where the ads will be displayed (e.g. top banner on the home page can be zone 1, bottom banner on the section page zone 2 etc.). Then create a new client. When you're done, create new campaign for this client. You can set up the zone(s), limit of banner / text ads / rich media... impressions, when the campaign will start and finish, the frequency at which the ad will be shown and many other options.

Ok, we have some campaigns now and they are sucessfully running. But every advertiser wants to check the results of his campaign. From this reason phpAdsNew has very detailed stats section. Your advertisers (or you if you use this script to manage your own ads) will be able to see how many times was particular ad viewed by the website visitors and click through rate (how many % of visitors clicked the ads). In addition, you can watch weekly and daily stats. Stats can be exported to *.csv file (data from *.csv files can be opened by software like MS Excel on your computer).

I hope you will find these information helpful when you will start using phpAdsNew. If you will need some advanced functions I suggest to open phpAdsNew/misc/documentation folder where are stored three *.pdf files with very detailed description of this script. The first one, administrator-guide.pdf, will help you with the installation process and configuration. Developer-guide.pdf is for advanced users with PHP knowledge. The most important file is user-guide.pdf which will provide you by all the functions. Btw. this file has 109 pages. Good luck!

Bedrich Omacka is marketing manager of Marble Host, a company providing quality web hosting with preinstalled PHP scripts including phpAdsNew.
